We call our work spiritual herbalism for two reasons. First, we work with the herbs and so this is herbalism through and through. Second, we acknowledge and honor the inherent personhood of the plants- they are spiritual beings. So, we have spiritual herbalism- a practice of working with the plant spirits to create change, transformation, and harmony in our lives and in the loves of those we serve.
Our practice is an outcropping of the ancient folk-animist medicines and magics of our shared ancestors. When we go back far enough we find that all people in all places and with every cultural nuance were embodying some form of an animistic perspective. This work gets us back to our ancestral roots of healing, and it awakens us back to our inherent connection to nature and the world itself.
In our tradition of spiritual herbalism, the humans we serve are people and the plats we work with are also people. This is animism. Because of the personhood of all involved, the common model of 'this herb is good for this disease' or 'use this herb for this spell' or 'this herb can be used for this outcome' simply doesn't cut it. Instead we work with the subtle personalities of the plants through their actions, energetics, constitutional effects, forms, colors, fragrances, and flavors to work deep medicine and magic that meets us halfway. We never treat anyone like a one-size-fits-all, rather we put in the extra effort to find the plants that align best to that unique person's unique narratives and needs.
Spiritual herbalism tears down the false notion that medicine and magic are separate or are somehow in conflict with one another. Our medicines are magical in nature, and the magic we craft is medicine for the spirit and the whole being. We reweave the magic and medicine of our folk-animist roots back into the powerful expression it once was.
Our tradition is one based on the land we're on, in the time we live, in the bodies we express. It is in altars and shrines, in prayers and petitions, in sacred fires and holy rivers, in the cycles of the seasons and the voices of our ancestors.
